shaolin kungfu

The Shaolin culture contains a long and rich history with many traditions ranging from physical disciplines, to meditation techniques and philosophy. At the heart of these traditions is Ch'an Buddhism, which profoundly influenced the Shaolin Temple and the culture of Shaolin since it came to China in the 6th Century CE.

Shaolin's physical traditions, such as Shaolin Kung Fu, Tai Chi and Qi Gong, developed around 1,500 years ago in Songshan Mountain. There were several contributing factors within the historical context which explain the reason for their development. These include the increase threat and presence of crime in the area and the growing practice of physical exercise within the culture. However one fundamental purpose for these physical traditions was to improve the health and wellbeing of its monks. More importantly, they developed into physical expressions of Ch'an. Dedicated warrior monks passed down these teachings through generations of disciples.

Shaolin Kung Fu consists of a long history and includes many different disciplines and styles; all of which include a detailed structure of their own. Each variant of Kung Fu includes multiple techniques for attack and defence applications and each variant presents them in a unique way.

Alongside the physical aspects of Shaolin Kung Fu, its philosophy features many aspects of Chinese culture. The most significant aspect is Ch'an Buddhism. The Ch'an tradition imparted profound influence on Shaolin Kung Fu and other Shaolin physical traditions. A detailed comprehension of these disciplines is not complete without studying Ch'an. Indeed, wider Chinese culture is also essential, as it is at the very foundation of all of these traditions, from Shaolin to Ch'an.

The UK Shaolin Temple offers training in genuine Shaolin physical traditions including Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Shaolin Kung Fu and San Da. Participants not only improve their physical health through this training but they also develop spiritually, socially and mentally. Our Shaolin Kung Fu training has a 9 belt system to help track the progress of the student but they will continue to learn more after level 9. UK Shaolin Temple Shaolin Kung Fu grading examinations are held 2 - 3 times a year.

Our Shaolin study is open to everyone, regardless of your age, or disability. We have a number of physical disciplines including Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Qi Gong and San Da for students to choose from. Each one of these is suited to different physicality, so there is something to suit everyone.
